The Hungarian Mission to the UN, in collaboration with UN Women, organized a successful Circle of Women Ambassadors Luncheon on 10 April 2017, gathering women Permanent Representatives and Ambassadors to the United Nations to discuss the latest developments on “Peace and Security: The Role of Women in Preventing Conflict”. H.E. Ambassador Katalin Bogyay, Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Senior Adviser to the Secretary General Kyung-wha Kang and Under-Secretary General Jeffrey Feltman shared their insights on how the United Nations system can strengthen its work in this area.

Addressing a large audience of women Permanent Representatives, Ambassadors, and other distinguished guests, Ambassador Bogyay highlighted the many aspects of women’s participation in preventive efforts – from mediation and post-conflict reconciliation to soft diplomacy, water, science and art diplomacy, and fighting stereotypes.

Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka underlined the important role that women mediators play in conflict prevention, and presented the work of UN Women in promoting their activity. Senior Adviser Kyung-wha Kang confirmed the Secretary General’s commitment to achieving gender parity within the UN system and outlined ongoing efforts in this regard. Under-Secretary General Jeffrey Feltman focused on ways to strengthen the preventive framework of the UN, and making it more efficient in anticipating and reacting to emerging conflicts. H.E. María Emma Mejía Vélez, Permanent Representative of Colombia, Chair of the Gender Parity Group within the UN, underlined the essential contribution of sustainable development to the achievement of peace and security.

Ms Mlambo-Ngcuka welcomed the special guest of the event, Hungarian Chess Grandmaster Judit Polgár, who was awarded the title “UN Women Global Champion Planet 50-50” last year. The Executive Director commended Ms Polgár for her successful efforts in fighting stereotypes and setting an example for girls and women in male-dominated fields, thus contributing to the efforts to eliminate occupational segregation.

The interventions were followed by a lively interactive discussion.

The Circle of Women Ambassadors is a series of events hosted by the Hungarian Mission, giving an opportunity for women Permanent Representatives and Ambassadors to get together and talk about issues that are high on the UN Agenda.
